Legal Aid

South East London Family Mediation has a contract with the Legal Aid Agency to provide free mediation for clients who are eligible for legal aid. If you are on a low income, you may be eligible for legal aid.

Please call us to discuss whether you might be eligible for legal aid and what information will be required.

You automatically qualify for legal aid if your capital is under a certain threshold AND you receive any of the following benefits:

  • Universal Credit
  • Income-based Job Seekers Allowance
  • Income-based Employment Support Allowance
  • Income Support
  • Pension Guarantee Credit

You can check to see if you qualify for legal aid here:

Click ‘Start now’

  • Under ‘Choose the area you need most help with’, select ‘Family’
  • Then, under ‘What is your family problem about?’ select ‘Family mediation’
  • Then, select ‘Yes’ to the question ‘Have you already started family mediation?’
  • Then, at the bottom of the page, select ‘Check if you qualify financially’ to begin the assessment.

A mediator will assess you for legal aid at your MIAM meeting, provided you have let us know that you would like to be assessed for  legal aid when booking your appointment.

If one person qualifies for Legal Aid the MIAM and first joint mediation meeting will be free for the other party too.
